Powered by Solar Energy

The Chiang Mai Umbrellas website is powered by 100% renewable, clean, solar energy. Our solar energy supply comes form our solar energy host Viridio in California, at https://viridio.net. As far as we know, it's the only data center with its own onsite solar panels.

Your can effectively reduce your carbon footprint by hosting at Viridio using pure solar energy panels for all its energy needs. 

Do not fall for so-called carbon-credits or offsets, these are mostly junk anyway.

We do everything to avoid CO₂ emissions:

We initially did an energy audit, writing down all energy use. This immediately pointed out energy saving opportunities. We replaced all lights with LEDs, and decided to completely turn off all PCs when not in use: about 30% reduction in electric consumption. Plus

1. We have adjusted our housing and workshop to use natural air, without air-conditioning, cooling or heating.
2. All stand-by electronics are switched permanently off when not in use.
3. We have installed solar panels for our hydroponic installation, and for two water pumps in the rice field.
4. In 2022 we installed rooftop solar panels, without batteries. This takes care or our daytime electric consumption.
5. We have installed a solar water heater.
6. We use an electric pick-up trike "Elmo" for our daily local village transport needs, and charge it in daytime with our solar panels.
7. We have purchased a second-hand hybrid vehicle nicknamed "Voyager". We gave it this name due to space-age nifties and solar powered roof ventilation.
8. We are looking to convert a now lesser used Honda CRV 1998 and Mazda Familia 1992 to fully electric (BEV).
9. 16 years ago we planted 500 trees, then 2,300 more mixed forest trees. This is about 45 tons of CO₂ absorption, to cover our CO₂ emissions for shipping.
